Couch Trip

In third grade we learned about metamorphosis in our science class. Every student had a mason jar with their names on them. Inside there was a twig, some leaves, and a caterpillar. My caterpillar's name was Donatello because he was the coolest Ninja Turtle, being the only one who used real weapons.

For weeks we watched our respective caterpillars. They grew, stank up their jars with their caterpillar poo, and eventually wrapped themselves into a cocoon. Green caterpillars crawling around are fun to watch. Brown cocoons that just sit there are boring, especially when you're a third grader conditioned by Saturday morning cartoons to have an attention span of thirty seconds. Tops.

Eventually the caterpillars emerged from their cocoons as butterflies. Despite having grown fond of and quite attached to our caterpillars turned butterflies, we decided as a class the best thing to do was to let them go. The whole class went out to the playground blacktop where we unscrewed the lids and set Donatello and all his friends free.

Our butterflies didn't have a lot of practice flying. They fell to the ground where the wind just kind of pathetically blew them around. Then a bunch of pigeons swooped down and ate them all.
